In 1939 there are at least three stations active in Austria: Graz, Linz and Klagenfurt.

As the allied forces enter into Austria in 1944 and 1945, several Austrian stations are silenced.
On 16 September 1944 an enemy transmitter (probably Russian) starts broadcasting on the frequency of Reichsender Wien, 592 kHz, with anti-German slogans.

On 6 June 1945 Rot-Weiß-Rot Radio Salzburg starts broadcasting in the American occupied part of Austria. On 8 May Freier Kärntner Landessender Klafenfurt starts broadcasting. On 21 March 1997 Radio 1476, Österreich 1, and Radio Austria International start broadcasting on 1476 kHz via Bisamberg with 60 kW.

On 31 December 2008the transmitter site in Bisamberg (1476 kHz) shuts down, thus ending medium wave broadcasting in Austria (for now at least).
